The Bush administration selected Leavitt to replace Christie Whitman, who left the position at the end of June. The vote tally was 88-8, with all 51 Republican senators, 36 Democrats, and one independent voting in favor of his nomination.
It is expected that Leavitt will be sworn into office next week.
Leavitt's record on environmental issues as governor is said to be mixed. He made some decisions considered to be pro-environment, while at other times made moves favoring industry concerns.
