DORAVILLE, Ga. — Purafil is working with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to improve the agency’s Indoor Air Quality Design Tool (IAQDT). The design tool helps companies incorporate air cleaning technologies into new and existing HVAC systems using current ventilation codes and standards.

To supply NIST with results and suggestions from using the software, Purafil incorporates IAQDT into Enersave, its energy savings program developed to reduce outside air intake rates in commercial facilities.

Based on a recent interpretation of ASHRAE Standard 62-2001, Enersave uses the standard’s IAQ procedure, which “allows the use of any amount of outdoor air deemed necessary” if the designer can show that indoor air quality is acceptable to human occupants. Enersave provides the filtration, documentation, and verification needed to comply with ASHRAE 62, says the company.

Per Purafil’s recommendations, NIST has added ASHRAE 62 formulas to IAQDT that calculate contaminant concentrations in commercial facilities. Purafil will collaborate with NIST on future IAQDT improvements.
