An improvement to the BACnet line of controllers is a patent-pending process to automatically assign MAC addresses to MS/TP controllers in the company’s line. The automatic MAC addressing process eliminates the need for a technician to address individual controllers in the field or for preaddressed controllers to be installed at specific locations - a savings of labor for both documentation and installation. At the factory, the controller receives a unique device instance number based on the electronic model and serial numbers embedded within it. On the jobsite, the controller is connected to the MS/TP network and powered. The technician designates one controller on the network as the anchor by pressing a hardware switch on the controller. All other controllers on the network automatically initiate the addressing process.
