COMPLETION:Expected September 2010
CUSTOMER:Buffalo Public Schools, Buffalo, N.Y.
OBJECTIVE:Renovate the city’s aging schools to increase comfort and sustainability.
DESCRIPTION:Faced with aging facilities, New York’s Buffalo Public School district embarked on a $1.4 billion project to modernize its buildings and equipment. The district partnered with Johnson Controls to develop a project plan and financing model to enhance infrastructure efficiencies in 65 schools. In the first phase of the project, Johnson Controls focused on lighting retrofits, HVAC equipment and controls upgrades, building envelope improvements, steam traps, insulation, pool covers, and installation of a Metasys building management system at select schools. In phases two and three, the team expanded the Metasys system to monitor more schools, and extended renovation initiatives to more schools, including lighting retrofits; burner, boiler, and steam trap replacement; boiler controller installation; and new interior storm window installation.
Johnson Controls also worked with design engineers to completely renovate one of the district’s grade schools and redesign it around achieving LEED Silver certification.
“The benefit of this level of control is first and foremost energy savings but it also provides more flexibility in how buildings and equipment can be brought on line.”
- Sue Eager, director of plant operations, Buffalo Public Schools
