COMPANY:HTS Texas, Houston, Texas

INSTALLATION:Two 300-ton Daikin-McQuay magnitude magnetic-bearing water-cooled chillers

COMPLETION:February 2011

CUSTOMER:CPS Energy, San Antonio, Texas

OBJECTIVE:To upgrade efficiency as part of a goal to conserve 771 megawatts of power by 2020

DESCRIPTION:With energy prices on the rise, CPS Energy wanted to be a role model for customers by making energy-conserving choices and encouraging its customers to do the same. The municipally owned energy company turned to HTS Texas to assist in a $666,885 state-of-the-art, energy-efficient HVAC equipment upgrade at the utility’s main office.

HTS Texas chose Daikin-McQuay Magnitude magnetic bearing, water-cooled chillers as the best option to fulfill CPS Energy’s needs. The small-footprint chillers, which help keep CPS Energy’s 174,825-square-foot main office quiet, proved an ideal solution for the equipment replacement project. Additionally, the magnetic bearing compressor eliminates the need for an oil management system and its associated maintenance costs.

HTS Texas and its partners on the project, HMG & Associates and LC Mosel, had only 30 days to replace two 300-ton, water-cooled chillers while the building was still occupied. Further, the time-sensitive installation required creative problem-solving and skilled planning. To install the chillers, each unit first had to be disassembled, sent down the building’s elevator shaft in pieces, and then reassembled in the mechanical room. To ensure continuous operation, the two identical chillers provide redundancy in the event one chiller is out of service for any reason.

“Our long history of working with these chillers has proven to us and our customers that they are an excellent energy-saving option.”
- Mike Donovan, principal of HTS Texas
