Installation: Lennox® HP21 heat pump, Lennox® air handler, icomfort Touch® thermostat, Healthy Climate® Merv 16 media air filter
Completion: Spring 2011
Customer: Galveston Historical Foundation
Objective: To make a hurricane/flood-damaged home one of the first LEED for Homes Platinum-rated historic buildings in the U.S.
Description: At first glance it was, as PFG Air Inc. vice president Kevin Stewart described it, “a tattered-looking shotgun shack that Hurricane Ike had washed two blocks from its foundation.” Now the beautifully restored 1,000-square-foot home in Galveston, Texas, is one of the first LEED for Homes Platinum-rated historic buildings in the U.S.
Led by HVAC consultant Thomas Sanders, the PFG team painstakingly dissected the tiny building envelope. Storm and flooding conditions were taken into account. The Lennox® XP21 heat pump was installed on a platform 12 feet high, secured with cables. Line sets were run underneath the house, rather than through the attic. The Lennox air handler was mounted above the bathroom shower. An icomfort Touch® thermostat and Healthy Climate® Merv 16 media air filter completed the system.
