ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Thermostat Recycling Corp. (TRC) honored Johnstone Supply, Portland, Ore., as the winner of its 2013 Big Man on Planet (BMOP) competition, an annual award given by TRC in partnership with Heating, Air-conditioning & Refrigeration Distributors International (HARDI).
“We are very excited to win this award. It shows our members’ level of commitment to doing the right thing for the environment and providing solutions for the customers we serve,” said Jeff Schultz, product manager, Johnstone Supply.
The BMOP award is presented to the HARDI member who collects the most mercury thermostats through TRC’s program during the competition time, May 15-Oct. 31.
“HARDI is thrilled with the total results of the Big Man on the Planet competition,” said Talbot Gee, executive vice president and COO, HARDI. “This program shows HARDI distributors’ continued commitment to helping the communities that they serve and providing value to their customers. We value our relationship with TRC for running the BMOP program and its continued partnership with HARDI members throughout the year.”
In 2013, HARDI members with more than 600 locations nationwide competed in BMOP, compared to 233 in 2013. Johnstone Supply won the competition by recovering 11,179 thermostats, which contained 107 pounds of mercury, during the competition. They were recognized and presented a trophy by TRC at HARDI’s annual conference.
“The BMOP award is a great opportunity for HARDI members to be recognized for their work to protect the environment, and Johnstone Supply has done an outstanding job of that,” said Mark Tibbetts, executive director, TRC. “Johnstone Supply was truly in it to win it this year, and the company’s efforts to champion the TRC program have contributed significantly to the program’s growth and success.”
