ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Thermostat Recycling Corp. (TRC) named the Rockford, Illinois, branch of Johnstone Supply the top mercury thermostat recycler of 2014. The location recycled 1,865 thermostats, equaling 15 pounds of mercury, which accounted for 12 percent of total mercury thermostats recycled in the state.
The branch was recognized by Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner for its efforts. Additionally, TRC presented a plaque to the branch to recognize its efforts in helping to keep mercury thermostats out of the waste stream. TRC plans to make this an annual event to recognize the top HVAC wholesale distributor that recycles the most mercury thermostats in the state.
The Rockford branch of Johnstone Supply has been operating since 1981 and was an early adopter of TRC’s collection program starting in 2000. The owner of the branch, Al Kunze, has fully integrated the program into his branch and runs special promotions to his customers to reward recycling behavior.
