FALLS CHURCH, Va. — The Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors—National Association (PHCC) announced that Alan D. Givens, president and owner of Parrish Services, Manassas, Virginia, received its HVAC Contractor of the Year award presented annually by PHCC and Trane, a brand of Ingersoll Rand.
A 19-year-old mechanical contracting company started in Givens’ basement, Inc. named Parrish Services one of the 5,000 fastest growing private companies in the country. The PHCC award recognizes Givens for his dedication to the HVAC industry through his commitment to his profession, his customers, his community and his association.
“Alan has made a tremendous mark at the state and local levels,” according to a nomination submitted by the PHCC of Virginia. While serving two terms as president of the Northern Virginia Chapter, Givens helped revitalize the organization and provided valuable mentoring to other contractors.
As a member of the PHCC, Givens has been involved in apprentice training, code committees, labor negotiations, and association leadership. He is a member of the International Code Council, and in 2015, Gov. Terry McAuliffe appointed him to the Virginia Technical Review Board.
An emphasis on training at Parrish Services results in monthly education credits applied towards a class or seminar designed to improve employee skills and job performance. Parrish Services provides in-house training for North American Technician Excellence (NATE) testing and state licensing and encourages participation in training programs offered by the PHCC of Virginia and other organizations.
Parrish Services also believes in customer service, maintaining an A-rating from EBSCO Research’s Best Pick Reports. “Our focus is to prevent problems and offer energy efficient solutions,” Givens said. An example of that is a “Summer Comfort on Loan” program offering temporary air conditioning during heat waves.
Habitat for Humanity, Rebuilding Together, Project-Mend-A-House, Homes for Our Troops, and the Fauquier Family Shelter are a few of the projects benefiting from Givens’ commitment to volunteerism and service to the community.
Each HVAC Contractor of the Year candidate is evaluated by a committee of PHCC members who judge accomplishments in six areas: professionalism, merchandising skills, management skills, innovative HVAC practices, trade involvement, and community service. The winner is honored at the association’s annual meeting, and receives a check for $2,500 and a commemorative trophy.
