Giant Eagle was recognized as the supermarket retail chain with the lowest corporate-wide refrigerant rate in the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) 2017 GreenChill Partnership Annual Achievements. The Port Townsend Food Co-op was recognized for having the lowest emissions rate among small/independent grocers.
EPA's GreenChill Partnership works with supermarkets to reduce refrigerant emissions and decrease their impact on the ozone layer and climate change. The partnership is designed to help supermarkets move to environmentally friendlier refrigerants; reduce refrigerant emissions; and adopt greener refrigeration technologies and best practices. According to Tom Land, EPA’s GreenChill Partnership program manager, there are more than 10,000 GreenChill stores across the country, representing all 50 states.
