A Neo-Mediterranean-style home in the Louisville, Ky., suburb of Elizabethtown has traded in its asphalt roof for standing-seam panels from Metal Sales Manufacturing Corp.

Described as having the clean lines of a house designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright with the added flourish of Spanish influences, it has a taupe-colored exterior with dark bronze accents.

Even though they loved the house, the homeowners were frustrated with the asphalt shingles on the roof. They wanted something more durable — and sustainable. The family has paid to replace the roof twice in less than a decade.

“We chose a metal roof because of its longevity and low maintenance,” said homeowner Roy Keith. “We are very pleased with the outcome. In addition to the roof’s durability, its look is exactly what we were hoping for.”

Typically, a metal roof will last 40 to 50 years with little need for maintenance, the company says. Steel makes for a lightweight, but strong, roofing material. The Keiths’ home has 110 squares of Metal Sales’ 24-gauge, 16-inch-wide vertical seam panels with a Kynar 500 finish in a dark bronze color that matches the home’s trim.

And unlike asphalt shingles, which typically end up in a landfill, the metal panels incorporate a high percentage of recycled content. And the finished panels are fully recyclable.
