Tjernlund Products Inc. offers a pair of energy-saving fans that are capable of automatically and simultaneously ridding basements or other areas of stale, musty or smelly air and drawing in fresh outside air. The XChanger fans come in two styles: Model X2D is designed for mounting directly next to an outside wall and Model X2R can be connected to the outside intake/exhaust hood with 6-inch ducts so it can be installed in a different room than where the outside wall hood is located. Both models feature two reversible 90 cubic feet per minute fans that can be positioned to move air in either direction. The user has three options: exhaust air from the interior; draw outside air into the home; or reverse one fan for a balanced air exchange. The company says although the initial cost of the XChanger is comparable to a dehumidifier, the dual fans in the XChanger use 35 watts of electricity compared with over 1,000 watts for the typical portable dehumidifier. Besides basements, other applications for the XChanger include supplying makeup air for stoves and fireplaces, ventilating storage areas, workshops and garages, as well as maintaining fresh interior air in cabins during vacant periods.
