A push to allow New York state to set its own efficiency standards for appliances and HVAC systems has failed.
The Republican-controlled state Senate adjourned June 23 without taking up a state Assembly-passed bill that would have allowed the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority to set performance standards.
The Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute had testified against the bill.
Association officials said they expect a similar bill to be re-introduced in the 2009 legislative session. The bill would have required the state to seek a waiver from the U.S. government to enforce its own standards.
