International has approved a mounting method for reflective
insulation and radiant barriers supported by the Reflective Insulation
Manufacturers Association.
Known as ASTM E2599, “Standard Practice for
Specimen Preparation and Mounting of Reflective Insulation Materials and
Radiant Barrier Materials for Building Applications to Assess Surface Burning
Characteristics,” it requires reflective insulation and radiant
barriers that are to be exposed or with adjacent airspace to be tested on frames that
provide airspace between it and the tunnel. Typical uses would be the building
“envelope” and HVAC systems where the manufacturer requires an airspace for
thermal resistance.
ASTM was
formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials.
