There's no doubt that imports of steel and aluminum products have been impacted by President Trump's steel tariffs. But exactly how much? A recent state-by-state analysis of Census Bureau trade data by U.S. News highlights changes in imports between the first six months of 2017 and the first six months of 2019.

According to the analysis, the states importing the most metals affected by Trump's steel tariffs this year include: 

  • Texas - $4.77 billion
  • California - $1.96 billion
  • Illinois - $1.93 billion
  • Pennsylvania - $1.11 billion
  • Michigan - $1.03 billion
  • New York - $993.35 million
  • Ohio - $967.26 million
  • Maryland - $944.59 million
  • Georgia - $783.69 million
  • Louisiana - $719.54 million

On the other hand, the states most dependent of metals affected by Trump's steel tariffs include: 

  • West Virginia - 6.33% of total imports
  • Maryland - 5.37% of total imports
  • Louisiana - 4.50% of total imports
  • Alabama - 4.46% of total imports
  • Arkansas - 3.21% of total imports
  • Texas - 3.16% of total imports
  • Ohio - 2.85% of total imports
  • Oregon - 2.59% of total imports
  • Illinois - 2.5% of total imports
  • Pennsylvania - 2.42% of total imports
