Jeff Bradley, a first-generation sheet metal worker from Sheet Metal Workers Local 36 in St. Louis, has joined the Sheet Metal Occupational Health Institute Trust (SMOHIT) as a field representative. In this role, Bradley works closely with SMOHIT Administrator Aldo Zambetti, visiting union locals and educating members about all the programs SMOHIT offers.  

Over the years, these programs have evolved beyond basic job site health and safety and today also encompasses substance abuse disorder education and mental health strategies and resources, including peer-to-peer classes and the 24-hour SMOHIT Helpline for members and their families. 

Bradley earned an associate degree from Vatterott College in heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration and entered the apprenticeship at Local 36, graduating in 2008. Bradley became a night instructor during his fourth year of apprenticeship and became a full-time instructor in 2017. 

“I wanted to give back to the sheet metal industry, as it’s changed my life,” Bradley said. “As an instructor, I was able to help apprentices and let them know what health and safety resources were available during [Occupational Safety and Health Administration] OSHA training, and this new role will be similar to doing that full time.” 

Although Bradley went on to serve the local in the roles of vice president, organizer and director of marketing, he was most proud of his time as an OSHA instructor. This experience, plus his natural drive to help his union brothers and sisters, made him a great fit for the role of SMOHIT field representative. 

Jointly sponsored by the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation (SMART) workers and the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA), the Sheet Metal Occupation Health Institute Trust Inc. (SMOHIT) was founded in 1986 to address the impact of decades-long asbestos exposure on those working in the sheet metal industry. 

Today, SMOHIT’s mission has broadened to include the total health of its members. By providing industry-leading physical, mental and emotional health and safety solutions, SMOHIT strives to minimize occupational illnesses, address mental health and substance use disorder in the industry, prevent injuries among sheet metal craftspeople and provide diet, exercise and other lifestyle information to address the health and wellness of union members and contractors.
