Since CO2 refrigeration was introduced in the U.S., Copeland has been a leader in the research, development and application of state-of-the-art compression technologies for CO2 transcritical booster (TCB) systems. Today, as CO2 adoption is increasing rapidly, our efforts are focused on delivering continuous performance improvements that support the expanded use of CO2 in TCB systems and other emerging applications.

In recent years, we’ve solidified our commitment to developing the next generation of CO2 refrigeration technologies by making significant investments in our research and development (R&D) labs and testing capabilities. From compression technologies to distributed architectures to industrial applications, we’re expanding our developmental footprint while providing the services and training programs to support our original equipment manufacturer (OEM), end user and contractor partners.

We currently have active CO2 R&D labs for the following applications and markets:

  • CO2 TCB supermarket lab — The Helix Innovation Center, Dayton, Ohio
  • CO2 TCB supermarket lab (with adiabatic and dry gas coolers) — Sidney, Ohio
  • CO2 transcritical scroll condensing unit (CDU) lab — Sidney, Ohio
  • CO2 semi-hermetic CDU lab — Sidney, Ohio
  • CO2 heavy/light industrial lab (with high-flow and high-pressure test beds) — Cudahy, Wisconsin
  • CO2 industrial heat pump lab — collaboration with major Canadian utility

Our commitment to CO2 goes well beyond R&D, products and components to also include comprehensive support throughout a system’s lifecycle. From on-site commissioning and enterprise-level monitoring to alarm management and data analytics services, we have the expertise to help you maximize the performance and efficiency of your CO2 system.

To help ensure the effective implementation of CO2 refrigeration systems throughout North America, Copeland is also helping the industry to support the development of education, training and certification programs.

In 2019, we launched a CO2 mobile training unit to serve Canada and the continental U.S. To date, it has trained more than 1,000 industry professionals in North America. In 2022, a second CO2 mobile training unit was added to Copeland Educational Services’ primary location in Sidney, Ohio, where it has become the centerpiece of a two-day training program designed to give contractors, OEMs, wholesalers and end users a hands-on experience of what it’s like to work on a CO2 TCB refrigeration system.
