Recently the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its final rule regarding low-GWP refrigerant transitions in new refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump (RACHP) systems. Many in the HVACR industry were expecting the rule to include a sell-through period of at least a year, so those in the industry wouldn’t have to deal with obsolete inventory.

Instead, the EPA unexpectedly included a “date of install” requirement. Now, complete, new, split-system a/c and heat pumps must be installed no later than January 1, 2025, and the EPA initially faced backlash from the industry in regard the sell-through mandate for certain HVAC systems.

However, on December 20, 2023 the Agency revised the provision to address concerns, by allowing one additional year, until January 1, 2026.
