EPA is counting on increased recovery and reclamation in order to maintain existing HVAC equipment, and finally, the numbers are going in the right direction. In 2020, just 1.6% of HFCs sold had been reclaimed and were ready for reuse, sparking concern of refrigerant shortages. In 2023, however, EPA reported a roughly 20% increase, compared to 2022, in total volume of HFCs reclaimed — mostly R-134a and R-410A, although R-404A and R-407A played a role as well. This follows a 40% increase in HFC reclamation from 2021-2022, a trajectory EPA hopes will continue.
