DOE has denied AHRI’s petition for reconsideration of walk-in standards. Is it getting harder to reach consensus on efficiency standards?

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has published a Federal Register notice of proposed rulemaking (NOPR) and public meeting for energy conservation standards for packaged terminal air conditioners (PTACs) and packaged terminal heat pumps (PTHPs).

While a number of HVAC contractors remain uninformed about changes in energy efficiency regulations coming in 2015, some are thinking ahead to how these changes will affect their businesses. A survey by Emerson finds that 40 percent of commercial contractors and 42 percent of residential contractors in the North see upsell opportunities.

On Aug. 4, the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) and Lennox Intl. Inc. filed a petition asking the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit to review the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) final rule establishing energy conservation standards for walk-in coolers and freezers (WICF).

The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) today filed a petition for review in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) final rule, issued on June 3, 2014, regarding energy efficiency standards for commercial walk-in coolers and freezers.

With the release of its “Standardization Roadmap: Energy Efficiency in the Built Environment,” the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) said industry, government, standards developing organizations (SDOs), and other stakeholders now have a national framework for action on future energy efficiency standardization.

Contractor will not be able to conduct business as usual — at least not without carefully considering regional efficiencies, system matches, high-efficiency motors, impending cost increases, and the penalties associated with the new standards.
