Eight outdoor units or one? Sixteen refrigerant line penetrations or two? The choices looked like a no-brainer for a contractor installing ductless air conditioning in Overlook Hospital’s Sleep Clinic: the fewer, the better.
ATLANTA, GA — The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) is continuing to promote the widespread use of its energy standard.ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA 90.1-2001, Energy Standard for Buildings Except
This editorial was written on the morning of the ceremony of the closing of the World Trade Center recovery site. That solemn, simple ceremony contained two seemingly contradictory messages: It’s time to move on, and … we will not forget.
Many of the product section meetings at the Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association’s (GAMA’s) 67th annual meeting were business as usual — continuations of existing projects, and discussions of federal vs. local regulatory changes. But two product meetings had a different bent. They represented beginnings and possibly endings.
The general didn’t pull any punches. At the Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association’s (GAMA’s) recent annual meeting, members were privileged to hear retired General Dennis J. Reimer’s remarks on the state of terrorism readiness in the United States today.
“Yes, the economy will continue to grow,” pronounced Martin Regalia, Ph.D., who spoke at the Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association’s (GAMA’s) 67th annual meeting. In fact, Regalia believes that, short term, the economy is poised for a growth rate of more than 3%.
It seems hvac contractors are still a little unsure how much of a margin of error to allow themselves when they bid on geothermal (ground-source or water-source) heat pump projects, according to Steven Bauman, a project consultant for New Jersey electric utilities.
The big push is on to replace R-22 unitary air conditioners and heat pumps, and it looks like the industry has really and truly decided that R-410A systems are “it.” This article offers an overview of some of the issues related to R-22 and -410A in the field: operating pressure differences, oil characteristics, and temperature glide.
When unitary heat pumps and air conditioners using R-410A were introduced to hvac contractors, many were skeptical. They had been working with R-22 systems for so long, the change seemed unreal. As recently as last year, system manufacturers themselves, though pleased with the new refrigerant’s efficiencies, were hesitant to comment on how contractors were adapting. This year they are speaking out, and the news is good.
Has your traditional a/c service and maintenance work been in a slump? Are qualified workers hard to find? If you live in an area with a lot of residential evaporative cooling systems, you may be able to lessen both problems at once.
