Five University of Dayton students from the schools of engineering, business administration, and arts and sciences were each awarded $10,000 from Emerson.
An investment in innovation came to fruition as Emerson officially introduced its $35 million Helix Innovation Center on April 27. The 40,000-square-foot center, located on the University of Dayton campus, will serve as a commercial building controls and HVAC technology lab.
University of Dayton students designed “supermarkets of the future” as part of the E-Week Innovation Challenge sponsored by Emerson during the university’s Engineers Week. The contest encouraged participants to deliver innovative ideas that demonstrate new approaches to today’s supermarket challenges.

In addition to supporting industry research across residential HVAC, supermarkets, commercial kitchens, and data centers, Emerson’s new 40,000-square-foot innovation center will itself be a lab for commercial building controls and HVAC technology.
The “home inside a building” will serve as a working laboratory, enabling faster testing of the company’s future innovations in comfort, energy savings, and connected-home concepts.
