This year’s Student Design Competition focused on the design of a new laboratory building: a large single-story building with a rooftop penthouse located in Cairo, Egypt. In the Setty Family Foundation Applied Engineering Challenge, students designed a portable IAQ health meter to detect contaminants in spaces and display the levels of different toxins.
Heat was the focus of two ASHRAE student competitions. The 2015 Design Competition focused on a three-story classroom and office building in Doha, Qatar, while for the Applied Engineering Challenge, students were required to design a collapsible portable conditioned shelter for treatment of heat illness victims.
This year, in addition to its Student Design Competition, ASHRAE also presented students with its new Applied Engineering Challenge, which invited them to design a portable refrigeration unit.
A new student design competition from ASHRAE is focused on taking advantage of today’s technology to provide simple, affordable solutions that benefit people around the world.
