LEXINGTON, Mass. — During the two-wing expansion of the Shire Human Genetic Therapies building in Lexington, Mass., Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractor’s National Association (SMACNA) member Walsh Mechanical Contractors of Abington, Mass., used its design-assist BIM software and machine shop technology to design, fabricate, and install more than 13,000 linear feet of spiral ductwork to support the facility’s research and development work.
Walsh Mechanical’s efforts enabled the building to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver status. As the full-mechanical contractor, Walsh Mechanical used Autodesk® Fabrication software from SMACNA Silver Associate Member Technical Sales International Inc. of Austin, Texas, to help construct two wings of office and laboratory space for the Lexington Technology Park Building 200 project.
Walsh Mechanical installed 869 chilled beams with more than 13,000 linear feet of spiral duct, all fabricated in its Abington facility, which all consistently passed SMACNA’s Leakage Class 3 requirements. Mechanical had 61 workers on-site and 14 workers in the fabrication facilities dedicated to the project. This contributed to more than 60,000 man hours — all without a single injury. (Source: SMACNA)
