The HVACR industry is trying to better manage refrigerants to prevent possible shortages. And with the U.S. phasing down HFC production as part of the AIM Act, the pressure is on. The industry is primarily doing this through recovering and reclaiming refrigerants, which the Environmental Production Agency is banking on in order to maintain existing equipment. Yet, there’s a problem. Even when the refrigerant is reclaimed successfully, it still isn’t enough to meet the demand. In 2020, a measly 1.6% of HFCs sold were actually ready for reuse after being recycled. Not to mention, the rate at which HFCs are even being reclaimed, has only increased 6% since 2017.
