Per recently released data from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in 2021, compared to 2022, there was an increase of more than 40% in the total volume of reclaimed HFCs. The main drivers contributing to the large year-over-year increase? R-134a and R-410A. While the supply of virgin HFCs declines, the demand for the reclaimed HFCs is only expected to increase. This increase is important, because as supplies dwindle due to said HFC phasedown, the EPA is counting on the availability of reclaimed refrigerant. Currently, the total production and consumption of those virgin HFCs has been reduced to 60% (as of January 1, 2024) of the baseline of the United States. Further phasedown steps will continue through 2036.
