INDIANAPOLIS — Carrier has launched a single-stage heat pump engineered to use R-454B. The move comes months in advance of the 2025 regulatory shift that requires that newly manufactured equipment use lower-GWP refrigerants.
R-454B, known commercially as Puron Advance, is Carrier’s refrigerant of choice for all ducted and ductless residential and light commercial applications. Carrier was the first to announce its refrigerant of choice, in 2018, and the first to publish Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) ratings for R-454B equipment, the company said in a press release. Carrier is a part of Carrier Global Corp.
“Carrier distributors and dealers will lead the industry with our R-454B-compatible units available for early training and installation,” said Nick Arch, vice president and general manager of Residential HVAC Solutions at Carrier. “We continue to stress the importance of preparation and inventory management and are proud to be doing our part as the first manufacturer to get R-454B systems in the field.”
With a GWP of 466 — a 75% reduction from that of R-410A — and no ozone-depleting potential, Puron Advance refrigerant was selected as the best solution to minimize environmental impact and provide longevity based on the Montreal Protocol-Kigali Amendment phasedown plan, the press release said. Carrier worked closely with regulators and research groups to develop standards, codes, and regulations that will help ensure the safe use of R-454B, the company said. The company recently dedicated its Collierville, Tennessee, facility as its Center of Excellence for heat pump production.
Carrier has also opened orders for R-454B-compatible fan coils and evaporator coils. Available units will begin arriving in warehouses across the country in early April.
