Joanne Kim

Company: LG Electronics, USA
Title: Senior Application Engineer
Age: 31

Joanne Kim studied mechanical engineering in college. Upon her graduation, she didn’t have a particular industry she wanted to be involved in. Her options were open. There were so many different fields she was interested in. One day, her old supervisor reached out to her with an offer to work as an application engineer for LG Electronics. The rest was history. As Kim has spent more time in the industry, she’s gained a passion for it. When she looks ahead, her career goals continue to revolve around HVAC.

“One of my career HVAC goals is continuous learning,” Kim said. “I think continuous studying and learning are very important for growing in the industry. After becoming a professional engineer at LG, I gained an interest in studying more to acquire other certificates in HVAC. I’m also interested in taking advantage of many different resources online for self-learning.”

Today, Kim’s primary focus revolves around streamlining the process of designing HVAC systems, and ensuring efficiency and accuracy at every stage. Also central to Kim’s responsibilities is the enhancement of LG’s selection tools’ simulation capabilities. Kim continuously seeks ways to improve simulation accuracy through meticulous research and rigorous testing. This empowers installers, designers, and architects to make well-informed decisions throughout the design and construction phases.

Kim’s biggest HVAC accomplishment to date? Her found passion in the field. She’s fallen in love with the industry, and what she wants to learn about it has expanded since she joined.

“Thinking back to when I initially put myself in the job field, not knowing where to go, it was the proudest moment for me when I found my passion. … My second HVAC accomplishment is becoming a professional engineer.”

Kim has also had the opportunity to mentor LG’s summer interns.

“I have always had a passion for helping mentor the next generation of HVAC professionals, particularly recent college graduates who are interested in entering the industry,” Kim said. “This was a rewarding experience for me.”
