Cassandra Kline
Through a combination of hands-on experience and family influence, Cassandra Kline found herself in the HVAC industry.
“As a second-generation sheet metal worker, my journey began by working as a shop maintenance manager’s assistant, which led me to commit to the apprenticeship program at Sheet Metal Workers Local 33 in Toledo, Ohio, graduating in 2020,” Kline said.
She then continued her education at the International Training Institute (ITI), and became a part-time instructor while gaining hands-on experience with VM Systems Inc., and later with Gem Inc., as a field supervisor and service manager for the testing, adjusting, and balancing (TAB) division.
“In October 2022, I joined the National Energy Management Institute (NEMI) as the director of building construction technology,” Kline said. “A year later, I advanced to the position of Director of Certification for the International Certification Board (ICB), where I oversee the certification process to ensure adherence to industry standards. My career in HVAC has been driven by continuous learning, hard work, and a commitment to professional development.”
Today, Kline has successfully developed and implemented updated certification schemes for TAB technicians and supervisors. This ensures alignment with the latest HVACR industry standards and practices. The process involves comprehensive reviews, modifications, and the incorporation of feedback from industry experts. Kline has also “improved the certification process by integrating advanced psychometric methodologies, conducting thorough job task analyses, and developing detailed test blueprints. Implemented robust feedback mechanisms to continually refine the certification process, ensuring higher standards of professional certification,” she said.
During her time in the HVACR industry, Kline has also managed to foster/facilitate industry collaboration between industry stakeholders, including subject matter experts, industry professionals, and regulatory bodies. She’s both organized and led workshops, seminars, and meetings to gather insights and feedback, “ensuring that the certification programs are relevant and responsive to the evolving needs of the HVAC industry.”
As she moves forward, her primary goal is to contribute significantly to the advancement and improvement of the sheet metal industry.
“This involves using my position at the ICB and NEMI to develop comprehensive and effective certification schemes,” Kline said. “Through this work, I aim to ensure that professionals in the industry are well-equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their roles to the highest standards. I am committed to making a lasting positive impact on the HVAC industry, contributing to its growth and ensuring its continued success.”
