I’ve been feeling pretty good about 2011. There are several signs the economy is rebounding. Many construction-related firms throughout the supply chain have indicated they are gradually climbing out of their respective holes.
As I was working on an end of year 2010 story
about possible HFC refrigerant mandates, I remembered that many years ago when
I was working on the old, now defunct RSC Magazine I was doing a story on the
phase out of CFCs under the Montreal Protocol mandates.
If you’ve been living under a rock to avoid the hopeful
candidates who were flooding your mailbox and answering machine with political
ads, it’s now safe to come out.
Take a deep breath and let it out - the midterm
elections are over.
The votes are in and it’s decided; a majority of
the nation is not too happy with the changes made by the White House thus far
and they are hoping the large number of Republicans recently voted in will make
them happier.
While visiting a contractor in Pennsylvania last week, I was told that it
is getting harder than ever to find good technicians. But this contractor
wasn’t worried about a lack of skilled workers.
Jobs are still hard to find in many regions of
the nation, but according to CNNMoney.com, “enrollment at for-profit schools -
a category that includes most trade schools - has jumped dramatically during
the recession, to nearly 1.8 million students from about 365,000 in the last
several years.”
I only had one free Saturday morning in October
to go raspberry picking. But on the morning that I had made plans to go, I woke
up to the sound of rain.
I just got back from the Food Marketing
Institute Energy Conference, this year in Minneapolis.
This is an annual event that I’ve been attending most years for more than 20
years.
There isn’t much time left before Congress adjourns for the
fall; the target date for closing up shop in D.C. is Oct. 8. Then, of course,
they’re all heading home to stump for your vote on Nov. 2.
