AISO.net, a Tier III data center in Richmond, CA, is saving 80 percent in energy costs thanks in part to Coolerado. Cooleardo is a manufacturer of energy-efficient air conditioners. According to the company, this energy savings translates to an annual cost savings of $24,000 for AISO.net.
The data center uses myriad green techniques such as on-site solar panels that enable the company to run at full capacity, including air conditioning, without plugging into the California power grid. Based on strategic virtualization and consolidation techniques, AISO.net’s physical footprint encompasses one-fifth of the space of comparable data center providers; a comparison of 2,000 sq ft versus 10,000 sq ft.
“We’ve always been a pioneer in green data center practices and it’s our responsibility to seek out the most energy efficient AC provider in Coolerado,” said Phil Nail, chief technology officer at AISO.net. “Coolerado air conditioners save us on energy costs and allow us to maximize our technology density while not compromising on performance for our customers. We’ve been able to expand within a much smaller footprint because of virtualization and hospital grade equipment, which gives us greater capacity, greater speed all in a much smaller footprint which also equates to less energy usage. Most companies expand their footprint as they grow, AISO.net’s philosophy is just the opposite; we reduce our footprint as we grow.”
AISO.net replaced its existing CRAC unit with three low profile Coolerado C60 HMX (heat mass exchange) air conditioning units. The HMX conditions air using indirect and staged evaporative cooling. Indirect means that the moisture used to remove heat from the air never touches the product air that is eventually introduced into the cooled space (leaving the delivered air humidity-neutral, as compared to ambient conditions). Staged means that the air is cooled in 21 stages — as opposed to all at once — which according to Coolerado, allows the company to deliver lower temperatures. The net result is a cooling product that provides conditioned, humidity-neutral air, and consumes only enough energy to power a fan.
“AISO.net has set the standard for green data centers; we are extremely pleased to be a part of their environmentally conscious efforts,” said Tom Teynor, chief executive officer at Coolerado. “We applaud data centers like AISO.net that are relentless about maximizing space, recycling, and decreasing their carbon footprint. Coolerado takes great pride in being the AC solution of choice for the green data center or any critical facility committed to dramatically reducing their energy consumption.”
