As the demand for electrical power increases, distribution systems are expanded to accommodate the increased demand. Stiffened transmission systems, increased substation capacity, and added on-site and distributed generation all contribute to increases in available fault currents.

Variable frequency drives (VFDs), also known as variable speed drives (VSDs), are used to modulate the speed of motors in various applications, from hydronic water pumping to VAV fan units to vacuum systems.

In my May 2016 article, “The Radiant Roads to School Design,” I was in the middle of designing a building with a radiant heated and cooled slab with DOAS/openable windows for ventilation for the College of Continuing and Professional Education (CCPE) at CSU Long Beach (CSULB).
